Text Box: X Farm Cemetery

The village was in British hands from October 1914 until the fall of Armentieres on the 10th of April 1918, and it was retaken on the following October. During the British occupation it was very close to the front line, and the cemeteries which it contains are those made by fighting units and field ambulances in the earlier days of trench warfare. “X” Farm Cemetery was begun in April 1915 and used until June 1916, and it is sometimes called “Wine Avenue” . It was intended to take the place to Desplanque Farm Cemetery . There are now over 100, 1914 - 18 war casualties commemorated in this site. The cemetery covers and area of 1,065 square meters and is enclosed by a low rubble wall.

The family tree of the McGarrigle’s in the Northeast. My great Granddad Pte 20/1448 William McGarrigle is the name in BOLD RED. His younger brother Robert is in BOLD BLUE and he was Pte. 23/38 Robert McGarrigle 4th Tyneside Scottish. It appears Robert survived the war?. The other William McGarrigle wrote in BOLD GREEN was his close cousin who also served in the Tyneside Scottish  (Pte. 21/792 William McGarrigle 2nd Tyneside Scottish) and was killed 3 days after my great Grandfather and is laid to rest in RATION FARM CEMETERY, LA CHAPELLE D’ARMENTIERES. The Joseph in LIGHT BLUE is Pte. Joseph Earle 23/879 4th Tyneside Scottish, who was killed on the opening day of the battle of the Somme, 1st July, 1916. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. I am amazed at how many of my family enlisted with the Tyneside Scottish - and I won’t be suprised if I found even more of them!. If you can help, then PLEASE get in contact as it would be wonderful to learn more. As you see my Genealogy skills are very poor!.
